Sports time suck no more

I am happy to report I’ve maybe watched fifteen minutes of the Milwaukee Brewers – L.A. Dodgers National League Championship Series.

Those fifteen minutes were wasted in Game 1. During the game I checked the score on my phone once in a while to see how things were going. I did that instead of spending multiple hours watching the contest. While they were playing Game 1, I was reading a book getting ready for an Advent season lecture I will give next month. That was time well spent. Watching a long baseball game with the ups and downs that come with it seemed like a terrible use of my time and a guaranteed way to aggravate myself.

My sports teams have crushed my spirit so much in the past I refuse to keep letting them do that while wasting my time as well. The Brewers have a great regular season and then can’t get anywhere in the playoffs. They are about to be swept by the Dodgers. I think they’re playing tonight. They can accomplish being swept without me.

Checking scores once in a while lets me know if I should turn the TV on or not at the end of the game. If it’s close and it looks like a dramatic finish, I’ll turn it on. If it’s not close or they’re losing, no need to flip the tube on. I can save myself from irrational irritation.

I’ll watch a full game of the teams I am a fan of when they get to a championship (if they get there) but through regular season games, I’m out. That’s too many hours of my life wasted. I’d rather be reading, writing or being outside.

Does this make me a fair weather fan? Sure. And I don’t care. I’ve given these teams enough of my life. Thank God for sports apps to keep track of scores. It saves so much time and rollercoaster heartache.
