Welcome to the Big 18

I remember when we were the Big 10, meaning 10 teams. Now we will be 18 with the addition of Oregon and Washington next year, along with USC and UCLA.

The latest additions have come in the past day or so. Frankly, it’s going to be pretty interesting to play these schools now. I’m going to embrace it instead of bemoaning the fact that it will never be the Big 10 anymore, with 10 teams.

It will be easier to watch some games now that I’m in Arizona. I won’t have to stay up so late to watch the “U” — the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers (my alma mater) — play on the West Coast.

Things will never be the same with the Big Ten. I can’t go back to the league of my youth. Nothing has been the same since Penn State joined so long ago.

And that’s OK. I think it will be fun to watch the Gophers play Washington or Oregon. Or USC play Indiana. This is the league where my Gophers will play and I am going to embrace it, which is easier, since I’m out West. And it will save me from having to get to know much about the PAC-12, the “conference of champions.” PAC-12, I hardly knew ye.
